Six years after the iconic onion dome was removed from The Hobbs Building for safety reasons, the dome once again is home! Replicating the onion dome atop the historic Hobbs Building in downtown Aurora, Illinois has been a unique and interesting task!
We started with only scraps of the original dome, a couple of historic photographs, and a mostly intact original finial.
We worked with Studio GWA to create a new fiberglass dome, one that replicates the profile of the original dome as best as possible. The existing finial parts that were saved came in handy; we created molds for these parts and molded them to the new dome.
While the original will be preserved for historical purposes, this breathtaking replica gives the building back its crowning glory on the downtown Aurora skyline.
